Shruthi-Smruthi...

Religions, contrary to spiritual endeavours like mysticism, rely on scriptures besides the traditions, for their existence and relevance. Scriptures are said to be revealed, that what is heard - hence 'shruthi' and traditions are that are handed down and are remembered - hence 'smruthi'.

Religion itself implies organized religion. As such they are selective in their collection of scriptures and that too to cater to the interest of the ones at the top. Revelation can't be through such organized systems because organization is of power and authority which doesn't go hand in hand with the outpouring of the spirit. [yet to be sharpened...]
